Mash Up homework

Sonic Outlaws

1.) This is a film all about copyright, political issues in society, and the effects of different kinds of media. The main group in this film was a group call Negativland. They would take bits and pieces of different songs from a group called U2 and make new meaning from it in a new song. They were very critical of the war and mass media and what it could do. They would take different things from media such as television ads, radio, or magazine pieces and put them together to form a new kind of meaning. 2.) To make this film, the filmmaker is taking different radio, television, and their own film clips and putting them together to create and tell a central message about what they believe. It is interesting because that is exactly what Negativland did with their U2 album also. Usually when i see a film, it is created from an original feed and not taken from other pieces of work to create a new meaning. Sometimes in music videos this effect is used with old video clips or newspaper headlines to get across a message. I think by using thee different types of clips and mashing them together, the message is very strong and we are provided with a lot of examples which increases the credibility of the film itself. 3.) This is obviously very creative film that had never been made before. I find that very interesting since it is comprised of pieces of work that have been used before. The way the film is made is directly related to the message it is trying to portray conceptually. In the film, Negativland is given a lawsuit for using the pieces of work for U2 for their own album. However, that is exactly what this film has done as well, made a completely new thing out of old ones. This film is arguing with both the technical and conceptual content the rules of copyrighting and the use of media in our world. 4.) An example would be when the members of Negativland would dress up like the people who changed billboards, go up tot he billboards at night and change them to create new meaning. Billboards are looked at every single day by people that are driving that they are almost ignored. In this film they showed how the men changed a word or an image on the billboard to create an entirely new meaning and attracted a lot more attention. It interests me that this can be done, how just changing one word can make you think about something so much differently than you had before.
